The Outrageous actress chats to WH about dogs, dancing, dinner parties and donning a backpack

Rating:
On screen, Siobhan Marshall is the epitome of a bogan blonde. As Outrageous Fortune's Pascalle - all blonde locks, considerable cleavage and questionable intelligence, not to mention the tightest tube dresses in the West(s) - the 26-year-old is far removed from her childhood of singing musical tunes at family dinner parties in Epsom (more on that later). But this exhibitionist streak saw her complete a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts in 2003, and after a short stint on Shortland Street (she played a character called, strangely enough, Siobhan), Marshall landed the role of ditzy Pascalle West when Outrageous began in 2005. Not that she forgot about the singing completely: her musical talents saw her win celebrity reality series Sing Like a Superstar in the same year. During breaks in her schedule, the low-key actress plans her next overseas escape and when she gets a free weekend, you'll find her in the 'burbs a the local park with her dog. Marshall sat down at the super-luxe Fables Rug Gallery in Auckland to talk about the woman behind the tacky make-up and foot-stamping tantrums...

Do you struggle with those revealing costumes?

Yeah, I'm a track pants girl! In the beginning it was hard, because I'd never worn a bikini in my life, and they had me on the beach in a bikini, posing, and there were all these people watching. Sometimes the costumes are quite hard - if something is really tight and you're having a fat day, it's not very fun. You can feel those muffins over the top of the jeans. And sometimes clothes are so tight they restrict my movement. Maybe if you were a little stick it would be alright, but not when you've got boobs and hips!

How do you shape up for all those tight squeezes?

I play indoor netball and I do belly dancing - I'm hooked on it. I like the movement. I'm not that good at heaps of sports because I'm tall and lanky, but this just kind of clicked with me. You have to really use your brain to work out which muscles you're using.

So you're not a yoga fiend?

No, I don't like yoga. I can hardly touch my toes! And it's boring - sitting in a position that hurts and breathing through it just doesn't sound fun at all. Plus, my arms hyper-extend, so that's pretty annoying.

On the show, Pascalle struggles to cook, but lately seems to have improved. Can you identify with that?

I'm about as good a cook as Pascalle, to be honest. My mum saw the show and said, 'Look Siobhan, she's just like you!' I live in a flat, so we all do some cooking, but I usually make the salads - I'm the assembler. My signature dish would be my tuna salad with almonds (see recipe, right).

You recently performed in a play - has it given you the theatre bug?

I would love to do more theatre, although I don't know if I like [being in front of an audience] so much, hearing people laugh and react to things shocked me a little bit. Normally when you're shooting [TV] there are all these people in the room, but you don't notice because they're quiet. Actually, you know what I'd really like to do some day? Musicals.

Do you remember the first song you ever learnt?

Never Smile at a Crocodile [from the Peter Pan soundtrack] - I think I was about six years old. I started singing lessons and because I was naughty, the teacher would tape the lessons so Mum could listen to them afterwards! I remember singing in front of my whole family at dinner parties too. My mum would make me get up and sing a song from West Side Story - but it was a guy who sung it, so I'd be a little girl singing like a man.

Would you want to give singing a go as a career?

I would really like to try it out one day. It would be fun to make up some songs. Then you can't really muck them up, because you wrote them!

What about Hollywood movies?

Oh yeah, that's the other ultimate. I did go over to America a few years ago to check it out, but I'm signed up to this for now.

You love to travel - where's the next trip?

Toni [co-star Antonia Prebble] and I went and did the Europe thing a while ago, so my next one is Asia - I've been to Thailand, Japan and Malaysia, but I want to see more of Thailand, and Vietnam and Cambodia. And I'd love to go to China. I also really want to go to Morocco and Turkey - oh, there are so many places I want to go!

What's your travel style?

I love just getting on a train, not having any idea where you're going next, and thinking, 'Here looks good', and getting off. I like just having my backpack too, it's quite freeing. You do get yourself in some strange situations, but you get out of them, it's fine.

You carry a picture of your dog Bentley in your wallet. You must be smitten.

I love him. He's a schnauzer-Cairn terrier cross. On some days when I'm rehearsing or filming, he goes to doggy daycare. They play games there - he loves it. And, yep, sometimes he sleeps on my bed - but only when he's invited! Otherwise he sleeps in a little dog tent in my room, with his cuddle buddy.

Spoilt dog! So you're obviously an animal lover?

I am. I support the SPCA, and have participated in the Wag 'n' Walk [fundraising walk and festival for the society]. They just do such a good job.

Is that why you're a vegetarian?

Yeah, but I do eat fish and seafood. I can handle fish, because I think they must have had a pretty good life swimming around. I eat a lot of tuna, I love seafood. I'm not like, 'Don't eat meat in front of me', it's just that it doesn't appeal to me at all.

Do you ever get tired of playing Pascalle, given her, ah, less intelligent tendencies?

It sometimes can be quite hard, because I am maybe ready to have a go at a smarter character. But she's really fun, and I love being on Outrageous. We have a great time, and because a lot of people have been on the show for four or five years now, it's quite comfortable, with quite a family feel.

Do you have a phrase you tell yourself when the going gets tough?

If I'm doing something I'm uncomfortable with, or I'm a bit scared of, I know that if it's going to take an hour, then in an hour's time it will be over. I also think that if something happens, you're meant to go with it, so I do.

Siobhan's tuna salad

[Serves 4]

This is a great protein booster for a hectic work day, with its healthy mix of beans, nuts, tuna and cottage cheese, says Marshall.

Bag of mesclun, washed
Cherry tomatoes, chopped
Half a cucumber, seeded
Half 1 yellow and 1 green capsicum, sliced
Handful of organic almonds (Tamari roasted)
1 tin (95g) of sweet Thai chilli tuna
1 can Craig's Four Bean Mix in Brine
1 can sweet corn kernels
Parsley, chopped
2 tbs light cottage cheese
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar

In a bowl, mix the mesclun, tomatoes, capsicum, almonds, tuna, Four Bean Mix (use most of the can) and corn. Add parsley and cottage cheese. With tongs, mix all ingredients together then drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to taste. Yum!
