Scarves are fab for dressing up drab outfits, keeping you snug, hiding sauce stains... But do you feel like you're sporting a neck brace when you put one on? Sharon Haver, founder of fashion advice website focusonstyle.com, has a simple formula for scarf styling: less complicated = more chic. Thanks to her expert knowledge, below are three tying methods for different types of scarves, so you can pull off that effortlessly stylish look this winter.

The loop

Best for thin, lightweight wool or cashmere scarves of any size.

  1. Fold scarf in half lengthways
Fold in half widthways, leaving a loop on one side and loose ends on other.
Place the middle of the scarf around the back of your neck, with the loop and ends in front of you.
Thread loose ends through loop and pull them until scarf's snug but comfy.

Casual triangle

Best for square scarves in light wool or silk, especially over dresses.

  1. Fold a square scarf from corner to corner, making a triangle.
Loosely tie the two ends along the fold behind your neck, letting the point hang at the front.
Pull the centre away from your chest and let it fall naturally.

Twist & wrap

Best for long, bulky knit scarves or shawls

  1. Fold scarf in half lengthways at least once.
Twist the middle of the scarf two or three times, then fold in half widthways with loose ends at one side and a loop at the other.
Wrap the scarf around your neck from front to back, bringing the ends to the front again.
    Thread ends through the loop
