Get going

Ditching bad habits and getting fit often involves changing our mindset and applying ourselves. Even simple efforts will make a difference, so don’t procrastinate any longer

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

It costs nothing and can be done regularly by most people, but start with short distances and build up. Invest in a decent pair of running shoes to cut the risk of injury. And take it easy at first because initial eagerness can also lead to muscle strain.

ROUTINE STUFF

Everyday activities burn off calories. We know we should be using stairs instead of taking the lift – Jennifer Hudson says it helped with her amazing weight loss. ‘When I lived on the 26th floor, I’d walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator,’ she says.

We also should remind ourselves to walk to the dairy instead of jumping in the car. Be creative and think up easy ways to expend energy. Get off your chair in the office and talk to workmates instead of emailing them.

EAT NEAT
Sit down to eat, as it relaxes the digestive tract and makes you focus on what you are eating. You are therefore less likely to

suffer from indigestion and more likely to enjoy your food and not end up overeating.

SLOW DOWN

People who gobble their meal down are more likely to pile on weight, so put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls and savour your food.

CUT BACK

Cutting your food intake by 418kJ a day – equivalent to a couple of crackers with cheese, a tablespoon of oil or glass of wine – could make you 4.5kg lighter at the end of the year.

WATCH IT
Keep a food diary so you know exactly what you are consuming and can then focus on areas to target. Make sure you include all snacks

and drinks.

BELT UP
Get the tape measure out and measure your waist – without sucking in your tummy. If it’s more than 88cm (or more than 102cm for
a man) then your risk of heart disease and diabetes is increased, so cut down on the booze, quit smoking and lose weight.

65% of all health problems can be blamed on poor quality sleep. "Television running" will sort out most of life's problems caused by stress (which won't go away from your mind).

Good on you Hebe! My husband does only sprint training (similar to what you're talking about) and he is one of the fittest people I know. Thanks for the tip on TV Running, I might give that one a go!!

Your body can only be as strong as the most difficult thing you do in a week, so if you just walk to your car, then you will give yourself a heart attack if you have to suddenly dash to catch a bus. If you live 3 kms from work and you walk to work and home every day, you will become incredibly excited at how good you feel after 6 months - you can start to feel you could easily walk on water. Nothing bothers a fit person, problems melt away.
