The 2009 NIVEA FOR MEN Face of the Year winner, Bradley Smith, embraces whatever life throws at him - including the challenges of his demanding career
"He is everything the NIVEA FOR MEN man is: healthy, fit and confidently well-groomed"

In his job as an Armed Boarding Officer for the Australian Customs Service based in the Southern Ocean, Bradley Smith has been trained to be ready to deal with challenging situations at short notice. So when Men's Health threw down the gauntlet and asked if there were any readers out there who had what it took to appear on the cover, he was immediately up for the challenge.

And it was worth his while. In March this year, Bradley was announced as the winner of the NIVEA FOR MEN Face of the Year title as part of Men's Health Man 2009. NIVEA FOR MEN brand manager Vivian Yang says Bradley won because "he is everything the NIVEA FOR MEN man is: healthy, fit and confidently well-groomed".

Q Tell us a little about your job.
Bradley I've been working as an armed boarding officer for Customs for more than two and a half years. It's exciting, interesting work. We're on standby and then we'll get information that we're going to board a suspected illegal vessel. It can be arduously long. We can be at sea for six weeks or more. You have to be able to amuse yourself and keep active.

Q What do you do to keep yourself amused?
Bradley We do a lot of training, both physical and work-related. Once you get into a routine, the time just ticks by and then you're always ready for something if it happens.

Q Anything unusual about training at sea?
Bradley You've got to adapt to the conditions. You've got to keep the weights pretty low when the seas get heavy, and treadmills are a waste of time in a swell. We box and do core-stability and body-weight exercises.

Q What was your reaction when you won the NIVEA FOR MEN Face of the Year Award?
Bradley I wasn't expecting it, so I was surprised, but also thrilled to be given the award. I rang my mum and told her the good news.

Q Has it changed how you think about yourself?
Bradley I don't think it has changed the way I think about myself. I have always tried to look after my body inside and out.

Q Has becoming the NIVEA FOR MEN Face of the Year changed how you look after your skin?
Bradley To be honest, I am starting to look after my skin more than I used to. I generally work outside and in a marine environment, so sunscreen and moisturiser are pretty important.

Q What do you do to take care of your skin?
Bradley I use NIVEA FOR MEN Protective Moisturiser. It has sunscreen in it, so I just throw that on in the morning and I'm ready to go. I work in a fairly extreme environment - hot up north and cold in the Southern Ocean - so it's really useful.

Q What do you say to people who think men don't need to look after their skin?
Bradley Each to their own. Your skin is the biggest organ in your body - even though some guys would like to think otherwise! I just see looking after mine as another aspect of my health. The same way going for a run looks after your heart.
