You'll need

Mattock or spade; compost; water crystals; selection of groundcover plants; mulch

Here's how

STEP 1 Remove any existing turf or plants. A mattock or a spade should be all you need.

STEP 2 Once the turf is removed, turn over the soil to a depth appropriate for the plants you will be putting in. A depth of 15cm is adequate for most groundcover plants. As the existing soil is likely to be quite depleted, add a quality compost or soil improver and pre-soaked water crystals, then thoroughly blend in.

STEP 3 Experiment with your design by laying out the plants before you bed them in. We went for a design with a swirling feel to break up the straight lines of the drive. For instant impact, use a greater number of plants as we have done. You can even select low-growing annuals and re-plant seasonally to ensure an ever-changing display. Once you're happy with your design, put your plants in the ground. Add a good mulch and water your new garden well.
