As a child, having a tree house was the pinnacle of cool. Now, while most of us leave tree houses behind with sandpits, cubby houses and swings, a growing trend is emerging for adults to build and live in tree houses. As you can see below, these aren't your average bits of wood and rope.

This is known as a Free Spirit Sphere and is suspended from the trees by rope. Created by Tom Chudleigh, Free Spirit Spheres are eco-friendly and combine tree houses with sailboat technology.

Designed by Takashi Kobayashi, this tree house was created for an advertising campaign and was built out of driftwood at a cost of US$38,000. Image from NY Times.
