One for the boys: guys, a touch of grey and a few lines may give you a debonair charm, but nothing beats healthy skin with a healthy glow!

There are many reasons why men need to use skincare products other than the odd smear of zinc cream at the beach.

Skin problems

For starters, your skin is exposed to the same environmental stressors as a woman's. These include pollution, air-conditioning, the sun and climatic conditions. Your skin also has its own issues such as the aggravation caused by daily shaving.

Shaving destroys the hydro-lipidic film on your skin, which results in a loss of natural moisture. Your skin can become sensitised and dry, or suffer from what is commonly called razor burn. To help reduce this often painful condition, avoid using hot water on your face and always apply a calming aftershave lotion.

"I'll just use her products"

Men need to use products designed especially for male skin because its make-up is different to a woman's. Generally, a man's skin is oilier than a woman's and, therefore, it needs oil-free products to reduce the risk of blemishes and acne.

Get in the know

The easiest way for you to find out about skincare products is to have a facial or go to a pharmacy, salon or department store and ask for advice. Many salons specialise in men's grooming and have dedicated therapists to advise you on skincare.

For ongoing skin problems don't hesitate to see a dermatologist.

Skin that's problem free and just in need of a daily routine can benefit from the men's products available in supermarkets. Or, if you need more active products, go to a salon and purchase them, with or without having a facial first.

Just do it

On average, men spend more time outdoors than women and so tend to have more skin cancers and squamous cell carcinomas. The sun breaks down the skin's scaffolding, or collagen, and that's why a sun-lover's skin appears to age faster. It makes sense, then, to protect your skin.
