Last week on the TV show Ed gave you a tour around a fabulous caravan you could win, which got us inspired for today's blog. Here's a quick guide to buying a caravan: what to look out for and what to do.

The first thing to consider when shopping for a caravan is what sort of trips will you be taking in it. Will you be going away for weeks or short weekends? It's also worth considering how much time you will spend in the caravan, is it just for sleeping or is it going to be a home away from home? Knowing the answer to these questions will dictate the choices available to you, as you'll know what you will need inside the caravan, as well as how durable it will have to be on the outside.

Another important consideration isn't even related to the caravan, it's your car. Is your car going to have the pulling power to pull your new caravan? There's no point getting a great big caravan if you can't tow it anywhere.

As some people view caravans as purely temporary dwellings, and price is often a factor in a decision, they can often overlook the finishes inside: from materials, to mattresses to bathrooms. While it may save you a few dollars up front, if you want to get a great life out of your caravan it pays to go that extra mile initially so you're not caught out pouring money into it at a later date to fix simple things.

Caravans have come a long way and with the range and possibilities available today, you're really spoilt for choice, so it pays to do a little research beforehand. It'll pay off in the long run.
