Coping with Tragedy

May 29 07:07am

"If one is estranged from oneself, then one is estranged from others too. If one is out of touch with oneself, then one cannot touch others." -Anne Lindbergh

I saw the most heartwrenching image on the cover of a newspaper (see above photo). It's a photo of a couple carrying away their deceased child from the earthquake wreckage in China. You might agree that it's such an awful feeling, to view the couples' distraught facial expressions. In addition to the suspected loss of over 120,000 people in Myanmar, this tragedy puts everything into perspective.

Lately I've been worrying about solidifying my workshop schedule, refinancing my astronomical mortgage, bootstrapping the resources and energy to redo my website, and cleaning out my office closet. But all those problems, they are nothing compared to the torturous emotions that must be ripping through the hearts of the parents in the photo.

I don't share this photo to make you feel guilty but rather to encourage a reordering of priorities. If right this second you can embrace those you love, knowing they are alive and well, be grateful. If right this second you can move your arms in front of you because they are not buried under the concrete of collapsed buildings, be grateful. If right this second you can open your eyes and see your computer screen rather than floodravaged destruction, be grateful.

This is not to say, "Thank God I'm not living in China." Rather, it's my thinking out loud how to cope with the helplessness I feel watching the awful stories on the news and the sad reports in the morning paper. There's no doubt that making donations and trekking to China and Myanmar are heroic actions. But sometimes the greatest help you can provide in times of tragedy is improving your own attitude and perspective.

Be nicer, more generous. Love fully, without hesitation. Breathe deeply, slow down.

Human beings are like fragile little ants beneath the furious footsteps we call cyclones and earthquakes. But don't be scared to die. "Everyone dies. Not everyone really lives."

David..I too can agree wth you on the living part. Recently there have been some tornadoes in this area tearing off peoples roofs, destroying everything they own. Seeing the pictures of destruction left me feeling helpless, except for being able to donate food and other necessities from the comfort of my own roofed home. So I was able to do that, but at the same time it sure changed my perspective on what I'm worrying about. I am generally a giving person and I've definitely been working on slowing down, and recognizing my gratefulness for all that I have. Living fully is what happens when we slow down and savor the moment, take an adventurous trip, not rushing through life to die. Great piece here!

Ahhhhhh !!!! Being grateful......focusing our minds on gratitude. I believe if everyone on this planet would take the time to meditate on being grateful for the air we breathe, the water we have to drink, for the consciousness that beats our hearts for us and so forth we could change what we create in this world collectively. For years I have taken Dr. Masaru Emoto's advice from his findings on our influence to water. I have hung a sign on my 5 gal water dispenser that says "Love & Gratitude" I drink this water that has been influenced by these two words. I recommend this practice to others because it works. how we influence our world makes a difference too. This is something that takes place unconsciously but it does happen. Kind of funny......In April I went and saw Dr. Wayne Dyer speak and about 2000 people in attendance joined together in a group meditation on being grateful. It felt really good and I think it helped The City when that many people do a group meditation such as that one. Collectively, when a group of people are destuctive in their thoughts alone it unconsciously creates destruction in the world because there is a connection happening. Lets all try to be grateful so we can create more things into our world to be grateful for. Take Care Everyone !!!!!

Thank you for the reminder to be thankful. That sounds glib, but trust me at this stage of my life and everything that is happening around me, I needed this more than words can express.

Hello all my lovely blog friends. The awareness that has been awakening in the forefront of my own mind, is that there is enough genuine suffering in the world, from events large and small, that are out of our obvious control. Therefore I chose to be aware of my thoughts, words, and actions to be sure that I am not creating suffering for self or others. Deleting the critical, argumententive, monologue that habitually runs through my mind sure has made in quiet in here! LOL Lots of love AND laughing out loud!

yep.....my mother always said if we all piled our troubles out in the middle of the arena and then had to chose our trouble, we would go back and get our own original package......at least those we know about......thanks Dave for the reminder......peace
