Here are 15 top tips to help keep your pet happy and healthy.

1.  Choose an animal that is compatible with your lifestyle. If you’re 70 and not active, there is no point getting a German shepherd that needs walking at least once a day. To help you choose a dog or cat that suits you, ask your breeder or vet for more advice.

2.
Remember, your pet is totally dependent on you. You will need to clean up after dogs and cats, and if you have guinea pigs, rabbits or mice, their enclosure should be cleaned every day.

3. Feed your pet at regular times with a diet appropriate for its age and species. Don’t overfeed it because obesity is common. Make sure that clean, fresh water is always available.

4.
Ensure your pet receives all of its vaccinations and that they are always kept up to date.

5.
Worm, de-flea and groom your pet regularly to keep its coat free from matting and irritating tangles.

6. Provide shelter from cold, rain and heat at all times.

7.
Have your pet de-sexed, unless you intend to breed.

8. If you suspect your pet is in pain or is unwell, seek veterinary advice. You can be held responsible if you don’t look after their wellbeing.

9.
Comply with government regulations for keeping pets. Check with your local council about microchipping, identification tags, registration laws, pet-friendly parks and the number of animals you are allowed to keep.

10. Ensure your dog is securely confined within the boundaries of your property.

11. For the safety and wellbeing of your cats, ensure they are kept indoors after dark.

12. When you take your dog for a walk, always carry a few plastic bags so you can clean up after it. Most councils will fine owners who don’t pick up after their pets.

13. Don’t allow your dog to bark unnecessarily. Contact your local vet or an animal behaviour expert to help you sort out the problem.

14.
Teach your dog manners. Enrol Fido in obedience school to help provide him with mental stimulation and some animal companionship.

15. Provide your pet with the appropriate exercise. Remember, they’re part of your family, not your prisoner. Keep them healthy and happy and you will all get along better
