Mother's Day spa treatment

Apr 28 12:38pm

Give your Mum the spa treatment this Mother's Day with these pampering pedi tips.

Problem 1: Dry Cracked Skin
Solution:
If the problem is severe regular moisturisers won't penetrate deep enough to help. Get rid of the dry skin by filing it away. This is easier after a long soak. Once the skin is gone regular moisturising is a must. Pharmacies also sell more intensive hydrating products especially for this problem. If the skin is too thick or painful to file away, make an appointment to see a chiropodist.

Problem 2: Nastry Nails
Solution:
Start with specially designed toenail clippers. Cut straight across the nail and don't be tempted to get rid of corners as this encourages ingrown nails. Instead finish with a nail file and just round off the corners smoothing the edges.

Next tackle cuticles by using an orange stick to push them down gently. If they don't budge add a little cuticle oil to soften and trim excess skin remains neatly.

Before applying nail polish you may need to buff the surface to get rid of deep ridges.

Problem 3: Tired Tootsies
Solution:
Nothing melts away the strain of sore tired feet like a foot massage. You can do a pretty good job with either a foot roller or your hands.

When using a foot roller roll it slowly but firmly from the heel to the toes. This will stimulate reflex areas. If you don't have a foot roller, you can use your knuckles and fingers to knead the feet. This will encourage circulation. Use extra pressure on parts that are tender.

A relaxing foot bath is also a lovely way to ease muscle tension. Try adding Epsom salts, lemon juice or cider vinegar to a tub of warm water to soothe that stress away.

The Beauty Salon
If you really want to treat your Mum's feet then head to your local beauty salon or spa and get her a pedicure. The therapist will give her a foot bath, exfoliation, massage and beautifully shaped nails. She can get advice and suggestions for the perfect nail colour for her skin and the season. Their work lasts longer and there will be no chips or bubbles. Make sure she takes some open toe shoes to avoid smudging her beautiful polished-to-perfection look. Prices range from around $50.

Reflexology
Reflexology is a treatment that involves applying pressure or massage to certain areas of the feet.

According to reflexology practitioners, the feet contain reflex areas, which relate to all organs within the body.

By working the feet it is possible to find out which areas of the body are out of balance.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective for back pain, migraine, infertility, arthritis, sleep disorders and hormonal imbalances. For more information visit www.reflexology.org.nz.
