Cutting Edge

Jul 04 01:55pm

Time for a new you? Maybe what you need is a change of stylist.

They say a change is as good as a holiday. So what’s the best change to make you feel like a whole new person, refreshed and invigorated? A new hairstyle!

Whether you get a bob, a fringe, or just a colour revamp, there are a number of factors to consider when making sure the style you have your heart set on is the right look for you.

Making the switch
Changing hair salons can be a daunting task but it may be just what your hair needs. If you have been going to the same hairdresser for the past 10 years and always end up with the same cut, it’s definitely time for something new. Don’t be afraid to walk into a different salon and watch them work to see if it’s right for you.

The most popular hair salons can be booked up weeks in advance, making it difficult to get an appointment when it suits you, so look for a quieter salon. These are often just as good and have experienced stylists who can work miracles.

Choosing your new look
If you already have a clear idea of the style you want, describe it to the hairdresser or take in pictures and ask for their opinion. If you don’t know exactly what you want, be up-front about it – the stylist will probably have some ideas you haven’t thought about. Customer satisfaction is key in this service so they will do what they can to make sure you leave the salon happy and confident in your new look.

Schwarzkopf Professional Hairdresser of the Year Diana Moar from award-winning Auckland salon D&M says a stylist should discuss your face shape, style maintenance and wardrobe when helping you decide on your look.

‘Fashion is an important aspect to consider when searching for a new look. While people often claim not to follow trends, they do have a strong influence,’ Diana says.

Maintaining the style
Once the perfect style has been achieved, the most important thing is to look after your hair. Every aspect of your routine – washing, drying and products used – needs to be considered to make sure you get the best results. Shampoo and conditioner should be changed every six months to eliminate any build up. Changing shampoo brands will give your hair a new lease on life as hair often adjusts to a product over a long period of time.

Water temperature is also an important factor to consider – it plays more of a part than we think. Hot water gives dry hair the moisture it craves, whereas cool and lukewarm water is ideal for oily hair – the cool water rinse helps close hair cuticles, cutting off oil production and making hair feel smoother. Hair dryers and straighteners have become the secret to a good hair day but sadly these tools come with consequences. Invest in a good thermal protector that will guard your hair from direct heat and lock in moisture, reducing the likelihood of split ends.
