Your Pet | Shaggy dog tale

The lovable sheepdog is a favourite with families.

Just about everyone knows the old English sheepdog. His shaggy, teddy bear-like good looks and ambling playful gait have made him a family favourite.

He's even a TV star. Remember Barkley from Sesame Street and Dash the famous Dulux paint dog? Here are five reasons why a sheepie might be suitable for you:

They're forever young

This breed is puppy-like in temperament until they're at least five years old. They're playful, a little mischievous and always happy.

They love to run

These dogs need lots of exercise and are the perfect training partner if you love to pound the pavement.

They adore children

Sheepies are a favourite with kids. My father grew up with one, and as children we listened to many fond and funny stories about ‘Come-along', his sheepdog who used to herd him constantly by gently nudging him around the house until he had him where he wanted him.

You're a hairdresser at heart

That luxurious coat doesn't come care-free. Sheepies need constant grooming, and must be brushed all over, from their dense undercoat up, at least three times a week. Their hair should be clipped short for easier maintenance, and this will need to be done approximately every three months. It's best if you start brushing regularly from puppyhood so the dog gets used to it.

You like to be the boss

Sheepies are very intelligent and gentle, but they can be wilful. If you don't have a firm, consistent training approach they'll quickly take control. These dogs are excellent for obedience and agility training - which they need a lot of.

It's best if training start from a young age, and the whole family should get involved to ensure a consistent approach.
