Six ways to help boost your immunity this winter

  1. Omega 3 Eating two servings of oily fish a week, such as salmon or sardines, helps reduce inflammation, which improves airflow and protects lungs from respiratory infections.
  2. Wholegrains A daily serving of wholegrains, especially oats, has been found to boost immunity and may help antibiotics work better. The protective substances in oats are called beta-glucans.
  3. Garlic Allicin, a compound found in garlic, helps fight bacteria and infection.
  4. Probiotics The bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri has been found to stimulate white blood cell production.
  5. Chicken soup The amino acid cysteine, which is released from chicken when it is cooking, helps thin the mucus and blocks migration of inflammatory cells.
  6. Tea L-theanine found in tea helps boosts the production of virus-fighting interferons in the blood. Drink several cups of black or green tea each day.

A virus (pathogen) can enter into a human cell interfering with the cell’s normal operating functions. These virus-containing cells then replicate themselves and the patient develops flu symptoms. At this stage the patient is unwell and can easily pass on their flu virus to family, friends and work
