5 ways to live on less

Everyone's feeling the pinch, but there are ways to make ends meet.

More New Zealanders are losing their jobs or being forced to reduce their hours. If your income is down, adjust your family budget and cut back on expenses instead of living on credit.

Shop smart

Anything at eye level on supermarket shelves will be more expensive than items at your toes or above your head. You can also save up to 20 per cent on your bill by shopping on a Friday - supermarkets get fresh food in for the weekend and offer the best specials.

Buy in bulk

Gather your friends and buy fresh food together, like with a co-op. This will give you bargaining power at your local greengrocer, hopefully resulting in lower prices.

Don't fork out for a day out

Encourage your children to spend time outdoors. Pack a picnic lunch and go for a family bike ride or walk.

Never pay full price

Don't be afraid to ask for a discount, especially when buying expensive items such as TVs, refrigerators or sofas. Start by offering 20 per cent less and try to negotiate a 10 per cent discount. You may also get a better deal if you pay cash.

Review your bills

Install energy-efficient lights and use the clothesline, not the dryer. You can save on insurance by having home, car and life policies with the same company. It's also economical to get a package deal for your landline, mobile and internet.
