Your Home | Space Invaders

Most of us accumulate more than we need, and most houses don't have enough places to put things. The key to keeping small homes and apartments tidy is to maximize storage.

Think in terms of multiple use. For example, an ottoman seat or footstool with a lift-up top will allow you to store things inside. Another ideal storage place is under the bed. Keep things in boxes or sealed bags so you can easily pull them out to clean.

Another great and affordable look is cane baskets on open shelves. Matching baskets work as a nice-looking feature but also provide a practical solution.

Bathroom

A great look is rolled towels in a basket. It takes a few extra moments to roll them but they will look stylish, be easily accessible and save room in the cupboard. Only use towels that are colour coordinated with your bathroom! Another nice look is a few towels in a woven bag.

Kitchen

The ever-growing number of appliances and utensils makes it hard to find room in the kitchen. Think outside the square. Nice jars or vases can be a good-looking way to store utensils, making them easy to grab. Make a feature out of what you place on shelves. Put out the things you want people to see and use the kitchen cupboards for less sightly things.

Kids' rooms

Today's trend towards open-plan living means our living spaces need to be multi-functional. While a home needs to be a home that doesn't mean it needs to be a mess. Even young children will respond well to a sense of order.

A big cane laundry hamper can make a great place to store the toys. Close the lid and the room is tidy. If children learn to respect their room they will experience a greater sense of ownership and pride in their living space. Likewise, plastic toys littered around the bathroom is not a good look. Throw them in a basket or chest.

Living room

One of the greatest challenges in today's living room is how to store our ever-growing collection of CDs and DVDs. There are many options out there but in my view the best are those that make them invisible.

Coffee tables with a second level underneath are also great for storing all those magazines and newspapers while keeping the top free for a nice centrepiece.
