The 2009 Mercedes Benz Brisbane Fashion Festival

I always love it when August hits, it symbolises the end of winter, the first drop of a new season and of course the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane. A highlight on my yearly calendar the festival promises to be full of fresh new designers, fun events and of course warm weather. This year I was not disappointed and I successfully marked each essential off my list, especially the last one with the mercury hitting over 35 degrees. So what makes this festival so good? Read on for my MBFF Brisbane highlights.

Favourite Moment in the Sun.

The festival kicked off on the Sunday with a group parade showcasing six swimwear designers. Using the luxury yacht MV Fantasea Ammari as the show backdrop multiple models paraded in the latest styles. My pick of the show was the Rebecca Manning swimwear with feminine floral prints, soft ruffle detailing and sexy cut-out shapes. I especially loved the sunglasses supplied by Optiko a fabulous eyewear store in the heart of Brisbane (www.optiko.com.au). Another standout was the retro inspired swimwear from Queensland label Karen Neilsen Collection. The sweet polka dot fabrics in sugary pastel shades left us craving cupcakes and tea by the pool.

Best Newcomers.

The Tribune in Brisbane's New Farm is a must shop destination while in Brisbane. I was lucky enough to sneak a peek at two of it's newest addition. Hayley Green and Holly Satterthwaite are about to hit the store so those lucky enough to be in Brisbane go and check it out. Great designs that will get you noticed on the street.

Favourite Chill Out Spot.

With the long days and constant standing in heels every fashionista needs a little beauty break. Lucky for me Stephanies Spa Retreat was only five minutes away. Opened two years ago this day spa is the ideal place to chill out and relax and it's right in the heart of the city. One relaxing facial and a rejuvenating pedicure later I was ready to head out and hit the shows all over again. (www.stephanies.com.au)

Most Artistic Moment.

To coincide with the festival the GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) has opened an exhibition showcasing highlights from the last 20 years of Easton Pearson. Based in Brisbane, no one loves Easton Pearson more Brisbanites themselves and the exhibition highlights the amazing techniques behind the exquisite pieces Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson create. If Fashion is in fact an art form these two ladies deserve their place along side the modern masters. (www.qag.qld.gov.au/eastonpearson)

Most Memorable Banter.

Bright and early on Day 3 we were treated to a forum discussing the key's to successful brand development. This is a highlight on the schedule for me because it's a chance to hear different point of views on the intricate workings of the fashion industry. It's also a useful tool for new designers or people looking to take their exiting fashion label to the next level. If you happen to be in Brisbane next year this is well worth purchasing ticket.

Most Loved Collection.

I have to admit I'm a partial to a feminine frock, but every year we're truly spoilt by Brisbane designer Paul Hunt. His Spring Summer collection covered all bases from the modern romantic to retro inspired silhouettes. Paul's passion, attention to detail and creativity is apparent in all his pieces, he mentioned earlier that day he'd been up until the wee hours of the morning sewing beads onto one of the gowns. This dedication certainly shines through and if you want to wow in a custom made piece, Paul Hunt should be at the top of your list. (www.paulhunt.com.au)
