All the dirt on make-up

Thankfully, cosmetics are quite different from what they once were. The new mineral  cosmetics not only make skin look great, they’re good for it as well. Made from natural products and easy to apply, they’re a light and fresh alternative to traditional make-up. So, if you haven’t explored your make-up options for a while, now’s a good time.

No more death by make-up!
It’s as far back as 4000 BC that men and women  have enjoyed using make-up. And though the concoctions were were well recognised as health hazards, users were not deterred. Poisonings and deaths from cosmetic products were common because of toxic ingredients used, such as lead, mercury, arsenic, sulphur and belladonna. But, happily, in the 20th century, doctors began working with cosmetic makers, health standards were introduced and safety became a key selling point.

Extreme measures
In the Middle Ages, heavy use of make-up was frowned upon as it was associated with females of questionable character. But women did all they could to achieve a pale complexion to appear a lady of means. Affluent women did not have to toil outside, therefore were untouched by the sun. It was common practice to paint the face with water-soluble paint and white powder or bleed themselves regularly to become pale.

Mineral mania
The latest trend in cosmetics, and it’s likely to remain popular, is  natural mineral make-up. It’s make-up that puts your skin’s health on an equal footing to its appearance. The purest of these products contains completely natural elements, such as titanium dioxide, iron oxide, mica, magnesium stearate and vitamins A and E – all ground into a fine powder. These formulations are completely free of chemical dyes, fragrances or talcs, making them ideal for all skin types, including those with sensitivities like rosacea, allergies, blemishes and acne.

Why is it so good?
Mineral make-up acts as an anti-inflammatory to calm the skin. It also provides natural sun protection, and diminishes the appearance of fine lines freckles and pigmentation because of its light refractive qualities. As a bonus, it is oil-free and won’t clog the pores. With all this, who wouldn’t want to wear it?

It’s as easy as pie
The foundation powder is super fine, but its coverage is complete and you’ll barely tell it’s there. To apply it, empty a little powder into the lid, swirl your brush around in the powder (using a thick and soft kabuki brush is best), and tap the excess powder back into the lid. Then begin applying the foundation to your skin in small circular motions. Start with a light layer and build up the coverage if and where you need it with additional layers by reloading your brush. After a few minutes the foundation will have settled and your complexion will look radiant. Dust on a powder blusher if you would like a little extra colour on your cheeks.

It’s that simple!
There are also pressed mineral foundations in convenient compacts which you can use instead of a loose powder. They’re perfect for carrying in your handbag to reduce any shine your face may develop.

Note: The purpose of foundation is not to make your skin appear lighter or darker but to even out its tones and improve its appearance. You’ll know if you’ve chosen the right colour because it will seem to disappear and not look like a mask. Ensure you check if it’s the best colour in good daylight.
