Hair Perm Problems

DEFINITION

A hair perm is used on the hair to achieve a particular hair style.

DESCRIPTION

FRIZZY HAIR
Possible reasons
- The use of an incorrect winding method.
- The solution used for the perm was too strong.
- The condition of the hair to be permed was poor and unsuitable for perming.
Possible answers
- Do not blow dry as the air may be too hot and burn the hair and cause it to be frizzy.

HAIR PERM UNSUCCESSFUL
Possible reasons
- The strength of the solution used was too strong for the hair.
- The instructions were not followed correctly.
- It is important to use perm rods not rollers.
- The hair may have been too long.
- Sometimes too much hair is wound onto the perm rod.
- A combined shampoo and conditioner was used instead of separate products.
- The hair was not wound on the perm rod firmly enough.
- The correct amount of neutralising solution was not used.
Possible answers
- It is important to leave an interval of 6 to 8 weeks after the hair has been trimmed before perming.
- Use a good quality shampoo 3 times before perming.

HAIR NOT CURLY ENOUGH
Possible reasons
- Using rods which are too large may cause the hair to have weak curls.
- Long hair may be a problem.
- Incorrect winding of the hair on the perm rods.
- The correct amount of neutralising solution was not used.
- A combined shampoo and conditioner was used instead of separate products.
- Not using a special hair conditioner before perming.
- Not leaving the perming rods in the hair long enough.
- An incorrect perming solution was used.
Possible answers
- It is important to leave an interval of 6 to 8 weeks after the hair has been trimmed before perming.
- Use a good quality shampoo 3 times before perming.

WHEN TO USE A COLOURANT AFTER PERMING
Possible answer
Leave the hair alone for a week before using a hair colour. Make sure that the colourant is left on the ends for no more than 5 minutes.

BREAKING HAIR
Possible reasons
- An incorrect winding method was used.
- The perming solution was left on the hair for too long a period.
- The hair was in a poor condition because it has been bleached too often before the perm was used.
Possible answers
- Trim the ends of the hair and apply a good quality hair conditioner. Use a wide tooth comb and comb as little as possible when wet. Do not brush the hair.

LONG HAIR/ POOR RESULT/ ENDS NOT PERMED
Possible reason
- The neutraliser was ineffective.
Possible answer
- If too much hair is wound on to the perm rods the neutraliser is unable to penetrate properly.

PHARMACIST'S ADVICE

Ask your Pharmacist for advice.
1) Always use a special shampoo and conditioner especially designed for permed, coloured or treated hair. Some hair shampoos and conditioners may not be suitable for permed, coloured or treated hair. Ask the Pharmacist which product is best for your hair.
2) Do not bleach hair too frequently. Bleaching can cause hair to become brittle and break easily.
3) Read the instructions on the perm package carefully. Be sure to use a product that is suitable for your hair colour and type.
4) Some people may have an allergic reaction to some hair products. Test a patch of hair first to ensure the product is suitable for your hair and skin. Beware of burning sensations on the scalp.
5) Do not use hair colourants during pregnancy.
6) Leave the perm on the hair for the specified time. Too long may damage the hair and too short a time may not reach the desired effect.
7) There are many other products available to help in the use of perming solutions. Ask your Pharmacist about special caps, gloves and brushes designed for hair colouring.
8) Nutritional supplements may be of some benefit to help improve the condition of the hair. Vitamin A and zinc may be of benefit. The B group vitamins are useful for stress management. Stress is thought to contribute to some hair conditions.
